Dachshund Coat Types
The dachshund comes in three different coat types:
- Smooth Coat Dachshunds – Short coat dachshunds have glossy, smooth fur. Short fur was the original coat type of the breed and allowed it to burrow more easily underground in search of prey. The smooth coat dachshund requires the least amount of grooming, and usually only needs a bath once a month.
- Long Hair Dachshunds – The long haired dachshund as a silky coat that can be wavy or straight. Long haired dachshunds need brushing a few times a week. Many people say the long haired dachshund has the calmest personality of all three cost types.
- Wired Hair Dachshunds – The wired hair dachshund has a rough, thick tight outer coat with a thinner and softer undercoat. They resemble a schnauzer with their eyebrows and beard. They require weekly brushing.
